Slane-Rathkenny just come up short after a terrific second-half fight back against St Colmcilles.

HT 3.5 to 1.2 for Cilles

FT Result 5.11 to 2.11 for Cilles

A rain shower just before throw-in made handling tough for both teams but this was a very good game to watch and much closer than the score suggested.

These teams were well match throughout the first quarter with Cilles Aoibhin Butlers 1.1 haul added to pointed frees from Saoirse McPeake and Ashling Dyer building an early lead against the two points for Slane-Rathkenny.  Midfield was fiercely contested and possession hard won on both sides.  An injury to Danielle Sweeney brought Niamh Grady into corner back and a reshuffle for Suzanne McAlarney to full back.  Slane-Rathkenny capitalised on Cilles uncertainty to work a very good goal  immediately after the substitution.  However Cilles goals from Deanna McGowan and Tess O’Neill added to points from Jayne Kerr and an Ashling Dyer free to see out the first half 3.5 to 1.2 for Cilles.

The contrast in the second half was stark.  With FairPlay rules reducing both teams to 14 players Slane-Rathkenny settled best and blitzed 1.3 to Cilles 0.1 in the first 12 minutes.  Things were looking tight for Cilles.  However the deep Cilles bench injected six pairs of fresh legs all around the pitch and Cilles rallied with 3 points in 3 minutes for Tess O’Neill and Ashling Dyer (0.2 – 1f).  Slane-Rathkenny weren’t about to accept defeat and scored the next three points of the game to close the gap again.  Cilles dominated the closing minutes and goals from Tess and Aishling sealed the win.  This was a very exciting game to watch with very good performances all round.

Cilles Division 5 team now have the full set of results from the opening three rounds; loss, draw and win; and are in a good position heading towards the Championship in three weeks.
