FT St Colmcilles 6.14 St Michaels 6.10

HT St Colmcilles 2.10 St Michaels 3.6
Referee Tom McEntaggert
St Michaels travelled with just 13 fit players, Cilles at home presented with 26 willing women and the ability to field so many fresh players in the second half told in the end.  The supporters were treated to a free flowing game with the ball going end to end at pace and saw closely contested personal battles in the one-on-one encounters all around the park.
Cilles opened with quick-fire points from Natalie Davitt and Tara McHugh, Michaels replied with a point in the 2nd minute before then bagging two goals in the 4th and 6th minutes.  Not the start that Cilles wanted. However replies from Cilles came from Grainne Rice (point) and Cliona Smith with a goal into the corner and a pointed free to put Cilles ahead once again.  Four points were exchanged up to the 17th minute when Lauren Collier again found the net for Cilles.  An injury to Hannah Connell brought Dawn O’Reilly into the game. Another flurry of points were exchanged before Michaels buried their third goal in the 22nd minute.  At half time there was just one point between the teams.
Cilles began the second half by introducing three of their eventual ten substitutes.  It took ten minutes before a score was registered, a goal from a penalty to Michaels after the initial shot was saved superbly by Saoirse McPeake. Cliona Smith got her second goal of the game in the 43rd minute and points from Cliona, Jayne Kerr, Ashling Dyer and Orla Deegan were matched by another Michaels goal in the 50th minute.  Cilles continued to roll on substitutes and finished with just three of their starting team.  Dawn O’Reilly bagged two goals in the last ten minutes.  Naoife Lenihan, Cilles youngest player, burst through from half-back to hammer a shot into the top corner to secure the win on the night.
These teams will meet again later in the year in Championship and all involved will be looking forward to the rematch.
