U14 Football

Bellaghy Wole Tones 3-4 (13) V St Colmcilles 5-8 (23)

On a day when our Seniors made the All-Ireland Final our club U14’s got proceedings going on the day when they travelled to the Tyrone Centre of Excellence to take on the Derry Champions of 2016 Bellaghy at 10:45.  As the fog lifted this game saw St Colmcilles open on the front foot with Sean O’Donoghue and Liam Stafford grabbing the opening two scores to see St Colmcilles race 2 clear.  Bellaghy then got going with the towering Paul Mulholland at centrefield releasing the corner forward for Bellaghy to score their opening goal and grab the lead. Adam Daly then finished a good move with a fine goal for St Colmcilles to regain the two point lead.  Bellaghy then hit a purple patch that saw them hit the next 1-3 to St Colmcilles solitary score and fine conversion from Luke Hanan as the first half ended Bellaghy 2-4 V St Colmcilles 1-3.

The 2nd half began with St Colmcilles on the front foot and Fiachra Mac an Aba then was central to proceedings as he first closed the 4 point gap almost instantly when firing a right footed shot to the back of the Bellaghy net after some great work from Sean O’Donoghue and Luke Hanan.    Adam Daly, Shaun Leonard, Luke Hanan and Liam Stafford then kicked 4 wonderful points to turn the 1 point deficit into a 3 point lead as Bellaghy struggled to get the ball out of their own half.

The 3 point margin soon became 9 minutes later when Christian Finlay first found  Fiachra Mac an Aba and he in turn released Liam Stafford for him to find the corner of the net, before the provider then turned finisher and finished another goal of his right foot to the Bellaghy net to see St Colmcilles  begin to dominate.

Bellaghy now had no answer to the onslaught and a great ball from Shaun Leonard saw him find Fiachra Mac an Aba and he continued to pull the strings at centre forward and this time released Conor Farrelly who fired another goal to the net to see the advantage stretch to 12 points.    Bellaghy now were all at sea and to cap a fine performance Fiachra Mac an Aba then kicked a wonderful point of his right foot after a fine ball up field from Oisin O’Mhurchu.

As the match came to a close Bellaghy were afforded a penalty which they converted to see the final score close out St Colmcilles 5-8(23) V Bellaghy 3-4(13).

Team: Danny Ehichoya, Conor Power, Caolan Nulty, Josh Hayes,  Christian Finlay, Godfrey Ehichoya, Oisin O’Mhurchu, Liam Stafford (1-2), Sean O’Donoghue (0-1), Shaun Leonard (0-1), Fiachra Mac an Aba (2-1), Luke Hanan (0-2, 1 free), Conor Farrelly (1-0), Adam Daly (1-1), Mitchell De Faoite

Man of the Match: This was fine performance against the Derry Champions.  After a first half were St Colmcilles missed a lot of chances they made up for it in the 2nd half with incredible work rate and ruthless finishing.  Danny Ehichoya was superb in goal and his kick outs pin point accurate.  At the back Conor Power, Caolan Nulty, Oisin’O Mhurchu, Christian Finlay and Josh Hayes all played great whilst at centre field Liam Stafford was in top form.

Up front  the 6 forwards work rate especially in the 2nd half was immense and their was some great performances from Shaun Leonard, Luke Hanan and Adam Daly in particular. However the award this week was a toss up between the wonderful play of Godfrey Ehichoya at the back who’s great reading and inter play was brilliant throughout and the creative play of Fiachra Mac an Aba at centre half forward.   In the end the award goes to Fiachra Mac an Aba.  He hit 2-1 all of his weak foot to turn this game on its head and had  a direct hand in another two goals as he mixed great creative play with an equal amount of high workrate of the ball in what was a wonderful display
