Round 7 of the CocaCola Club Championship saw Cilles away to St Pats/Duleek/Bellewstown in Stamullen.

The large crowd in attendance for this local derby game saw a very open and competitive contest.  The game finished with Cilles the winners on a final score of 3.17 – 3.04

The win saw Cilles finish in second place in the Championship table, 2 points behind Dunsany.

Cilles now have a home semi-final in Piltown on Sunday 6th September against Dunboyne.  The last match between these sides in Round 4 of the Championship saw Cilles win by 1 point with the last score of the game, a goal from Rebecca Kirwan.  The semi-final is sure to be a cracking game!

The other semi-final will see Dunsany play Clann na nGael.

League Report 2015

St. Colmcilles senior team finished the league in 3rd place.  This was one point behind Moynalvey and Ratoath, the only teams to beat us in the league.

While it was disappointing not to have made it into the league final the squad can look back on a good campaign.  We won our last three games, with a notable success over Oldcastle B, who were leading the league at that point.  The focus now turns to the championship, which commences on June 23rd.

Match Report – away to Ballivor 22nd April 2015.

Cilles made the long trip to Ballivor on a very warm and sunny evening needing a win to keep pace with the league leaders.

We got off to a very good start and kept Ballivor pinned into their half for long periods.  Ballivor’s defence was strong and very disciplined, conceding only two scoring frees.  However the Cilles forwards were on form and scored 3.6 with only 4 wides.  Our defence was very strong and were supported by the wing forwards and midfield to ensure that Ballivor were not allowed any time on the ball, resulting in them scoring only 0.1 in the first half.

There was no respite for Ballivor in the second half and although both sides made full use of the substitutes Cilles outscored Ballivor 2.6 to 1.0 – this was a very good team performance from Cilles.

The final score was 5.12 to 1.1 for Cilles.  The Cilles scorers were Cliona Smith 2.3 (2f), Tara McHugh 1.2, Niamh Doggett 1.1, Lauren Collier 1.1, Rebecca Kirwan 0.2, Caoimhe Dunne 0.2 (on her 16th birthday) and Hazel Reilly 0.1

Match Report – home to Moynalvey 22nd March 2015.

Cilles were short several senior players but we had high hopes going into the game.  However, Moynalvey are a strong team and showed real strength and pace from the start.  Moynalvey got the first point of the game with a terrific shot from a very tight angle and never looked back.  Cilles chased hard and tackled strongly to limit the goal scoring chances for Moynalvey but couldn’t stop the points going over.  Two first half goals, a penalty and a shot into the top corner, gave Moynalvey a 0.2 to 2.6 lead at half time.

Cilles never gave up the contest and fought to the end but Moynalvey were deserving winners on the night and the game finished 0.5 to 2.13.  Cilles points came from Tara (2 frees), Caoimhe, Natalie and Sheena.

A real positive for Cilles was the contribution of the U16’s players who featured strongly in the game – well done to Caoimhe, Tess, Tara, Orla and Rebecca.

Next up is an away match to Walterstown on 6th April.

Match Report – away to Skryne 8th March 2015

After training hard for several weeks the team made the short trip to Skryne for their first match of the 2015 league. Skryne having beaten us in 2014 there were a few nerves before the game. We also had to invoke the fair-play rules as Skryne could only field the minimum 13 players.

In very blustery conditions we were favoured with the wind in the first half and an early goal from Hazel Reilly and 4 points from frees and play from Cliona Smith gave St. Colmcilles a lead that was maintained for the remainder of the game. Skryne scored a well-earned goal in the 10th minute but Cilles responded quickly with a goal from Cliona in the 15th minute. Tara McHugh rounded out the Cilles scoring with 2 points. Cilles work rate in defending the Skryne attacks ensured that scoring opportunities were very limited and Cilles led 2.10 to 1.1 at half time.

Facing into the wind in the second half Cilles again worked very hard to defend against the Skryne possession and it is a credit to Skryne’s commitment and workrate that they outscored Cilles 0.3 to 0.2 in the second half. We all dream of scoring on our debuts and Caoimhe Dunne scored a point in what was her first competitive game for the Senior team. Rebecca O’Keeffe also made her debut with the senior team and gave an assist for the last point of the game. Both have bright futures ahead with Cilles.
