After the unbelievable finish to the ladies game it was the turn of the minor boys Division 3 side to take on St. Ultans Cortown Gaels in the semi finals. It was known that they were a physically strong side and would give us a tough match.
A quick goal settled the nerves for cilles and helped us go in two points up at the break. Continuing to play up the field with a slight breeze against, the boys fought hard in the second quarter going in seven points up. It wasn’t all our own way with the cilles goalkeeper ensuring we had that lead with a steady display.
The second half started brightly with cilles pulling away after two goals in a minute. Our squad of twenty four was badly needed with a number of the boys picking up injuries. St Ultans fought back in the fourth quarter out scoring cilles by two points but it was to be our day winning out by 5-13 to 2-8 in the end.
While the whole squad played exceptionally well two players deserve to be singled out for special mention which we don’t normally do. Rory Kelly has come up from the under 15s to play in goal which is not his customary position and has settled well into the squad giving a great display in the first half meaning we went into the lead for the second. Also, our free taker, Conor Farrelly was practicing all week and came down early yesterday to practice. This certainly paid off with a great display including one forty yards out from a tight angle against the wind.
The final is against St. Michael’s Nobber a team who we beat in the group stages in Seafield and they would consider themselves unlucky not to have come away with at least a draw in that game.
