B League Division 1 – 23 March 2019

St. Colmcilles 0-15 Skryne 0-12

The Cilles Jun B side maintained their unbeaten start to the league campaign with this hard fought victory over a strong Skryne side in perfect conditions in Piltown on late Saturday afternoon.

The eventual outcome did not look likely when Skryne scored the first five points of the match, two from play and three converted frees, in the first ten minutes of play. The Cilles finally got off the mark after twelve minutes with a well taken point from Ewan Coughlan. This kicked the Cilles off on a run where they outscored their opponents by nine points to two in the remainder of the half with scores from EannaWalsh (4), Robbie McCloskey (2), Ruairi Hanlon and another score from Ewan. During this period however both teamswere reduced to 14 players following a clash that saw a player from each team being dismissed. The half time score was St Colmcilles 0-09: Skryne O-07.

The Cilles introduced James McElearney for Ewan for the start of the second half. Skryne opened the the second half scoring with a point to reduce the deficit to a single score. The Cilles roared back and responded with points from Eoin Sweeney, Ruairi (2), Mark Savage and Robbie to leave the Cilles leading 6 points with fifteen minutes left to play. Further changes saw Lee Browne replacing Gary McCloskey and Ewan returning to replace Darragh Brodigan who picked up an injury. As expected Skryne rallied and reeled off three points to reduce the margin to three. Lee Browne got on the score sheet to put more daylight between the teams again and Skryne finished the scoring with a point.

Credit is due to both teams for the manner in which they contested the game with no quarter given by either side in attack or defense. Both defenses worked tirelessly with some great tackling and saves throughout the match. The Cilles lads displayed great courage to hold out for the win against a very competitive and talented side who fought gallantly to the end but were unable to find the goal they needed. Overall this was the correct result due to the Cilles domination of the match for long periods.

The next outing for this Cilles team will be a championship clash with St Pats on 13th April.
