St Colmcilles 2-13 : Ratoath 1- 13
The Cilles claimed the points after a mighty struggle against a formidable Ratoath team on a glorious afternoon for football in Piltown. Playing with the aid of the breeze, the Cilles had the ball in the back of the net within a minute only for the score to be disallowed for a square ball. The Ratoath reaction was to take a two point lead with some fine play. The Cilles first score came in the fifth minute when a strong run from the back from Adam McCabe saw an excellent pass to Eoin O’Neill who slotted it between the posts. He leveled the game with another point in the seventh minute. A great field from Robbie McCloskey fed Mark Savage who finished to the net for the games opening goal. Ratoath interupted the Cilles scoring run with a pointed free from close range.
In the next ten minute spell the Cilles went on scoring spree with points from Stephen Emmett, Eoin O’Neill, Shane Crillyand Ruairi Hanlon and a goal from Ferdia Quigley to lead by 2-6 to 3 points after sixteen minutes of play. A Ratoath point halted the run and a full length dive from keeper Lee McGuinness kept Ratoath at bay. Two further Cilles points from Adam McCabe and Eoin O’Neill stretched the lead after twenty one minutes. Ratoath then hit a purple patch and scored a goal and four points without reply to reduce the gap. During this period the Cilles lost Hugo Collins to injury who was replaced by Lee Browne. Ewan Coughlan and Sean Collier replaced Ferdia and Shane after ten minutes of the half. At that stage, the Ratoath attack’s were relentless and a return of only four points during this period was due to a large extent to the defiant defending from the Cilles rearguard with some great last minute tackling. With the clock ticking away and only a point between the sides the exchanges were fierce with not an inch been given by either side. Darragh Kelly replaced Mark with ten minutes to go with both teams looking to get the upper hand a Cilles attack on thirty minutes resulted in a 45 which Ruairi dispatched between the posts to double the lead. With time running out Ruairi pointed the Cilles first free of the game to leave the final score at Cilles 2-13 : Ratoath 1-13.
