St Colmcilles 4.08

Seneschalstown 2.17

The eagerly awaited final round minor league clash of St Colmcilles and Seneschalstown took place in Piltown on Tuesday 20th March. St Colmcilles were already qualified for the semi finals but Seneschalstown (with the addition of Rathkenny players) required at least a draw to progress to the knockout stages. Unfortunately as the teams were warming up on the field, word began to filter through of the tragic accidental death of Max Mason, Colaiste na hInse 5th year student and close friend of a number of the St Colmcilles players. After some discussion, the St Colmcilles players decided to go ahead with the match and the game began in an understandably very subdued atmosphere around Piltown.

On a night that certainly put a game of football in perspective, Seneschalstown were very fast out of the blocks and after 15 minutes had built up a commanding lead. Showing great character, the Cilles lads pulled the score back to only two points at the break. The second half was a very competitive and high scoring affair with both sides playing some very good football. At the end, Seneschalstown deservedly ran out winners on the night by a margin of three points. Prominent on the night for St Colmcilles were Hugo Collins and Stephen Breen in defence, Ross Molloy in the middle of the park and David Bell up front.
St Colmcilles now progress to the semi finals versus Simonstown – due to funeral arrangements, this game has now been postponed to Wednesday 28th March at 7pm in Simonstown.
St Colmcilles can again be very proud of this group of players as they coped with very difficult and traumatic circumstances on the night. The thoughts of everyone at St Colmciles at this time are with the family of Max Mason especially his mum Tracy and all his friends – Ar dheis Dé do raibh a anam.
