Division1 – LMFM – Minor League Final “You can get it if you really want it”
St Colmcilles V Simonstown Gaels 14th April Fr Tully Pk, Senechalstown
Colmcilles 4-15 Simonstown 1-14 AET
Just like Sean Collier’s normal time life-saving point in the semi final vs Ratoath, it was David Bell’s turn to inject the life-saving score at the death against a gallant Simonstown side last night in a baltic Fr Tully Park , Senechalstown.
Again the Cilles boys chose the hard road, to ride out a second half rally by Simonstown Gaels in a game that looked dead and buried for them in normal time. Heroic performances all over, on and off the pitch got this never-say-die group across the line in extra time to the club’s first Div 1 Minor league title. The Cilles boys remain unbeaten throughout the league, a tribute to the hard work put in by everyone in the squad during the Winter and early Spring.
A solid start got the Cilles in front but the Simonstown lads rallied and stayed the course throughout, with only one point the difference at half time.
With well worked team scores throughout the second half, coupled with David Bell’s equalizer and steadily taking the initiative through both periods of extra time with contributions from Adam Daly David Bell Luke Hannan Ben Wilde Ciaran White, Sean O’Donoghue and Caolan Nulty the Cilles were not to be denied. A well-organised defensive unit led by Liam Stafford marshalled the Simonstown attack relentlessly, ably assisted by Mark “Chopper” Harris ,Godfrey Ehichoya, Matty Weir and Conor Power. The leadership provided by Captain Cian Flynn exemplary throughout. Replacements Endy Ehichoya, Cillian Quigley , Tadhg Bennett , Fiachra McNabb, Emmett Higgins and Sean Horan all contributed to the team effort on show on a historic night for the club. Unfortunately injuries denied us the services of Brian Butler and Conor Farrelly whose immense efforts in the previous games got us to the final. We look forward to having them back for summer.
David Gough in the middle showed clearly why he is one of headquarter’s go-to men ,in a physical affair and that saw red and black.
Credit where it is due behind the scenes to Keith Loughman, Mark Gallagher and Pat Haigney who provide the backup nobody sees. Same for Jack Reynolds and Mark Whearty of our senior team whose fingerprints are all over these boys never knowing when they are beaten.
Lastly, a word of thanks to Noel Smith at the Boyne Valley for his assistance during winter prep.
