St Colmcilles 4 – 10 : Trim 0 – 09
Having received a walkover in Round 3 the Cilles travelled to Ardcath on Friday evening to take on Trim with top spot in the Group at stake. On a great evening for football on a well set up pitch, the Cilles lads set about their task with confidence.
In a game where they were never behind the Cilles starting 15 featured six 19 year olds and another four 20 year olds who allgave a great account of themselves. The experience and guidance provided by the more senior lads led to this being a great team performance. A point from Stephen Emmett opened the scoring which was followed by a goal from John McKenna and a point from Eanna Walsh that had the Cilles 1-02 up before Trim registered their first point. Further scores during the first half from Jack Bohan, Gavin Taylor, Donal Meagher, a goal and a point, and Eoin O’Neill saw the Cilleslead at half time by 2-06 to Trim’s 0-05.
The second half followed a similar pattern out scoring Trim by 2-04 to 0-04. The Cilles goals in the second half came from Eoin O’Neill and Eanna Walsh with points coming from Eoin (2), Eanna, Donal and Stephen again. The final score was Cilles 4-10 : Trim 0-09.
The Trim attack had difficulty coping with the Cilles defending especially in the full back line with Brian, Fearghal and Darragh cleaning up everything that came their way. The assured kick outs from Lee gave a constant supply to Eoin and Matthew in midfield assisted by Shane when he joined the frey in the second half. The support provided by Lorcan, Darragh, and Johner in the halfback line kept the ball moving forward.
With all of the starting forwards scoring and the dogged defending by the defense this victory was a tribute to the effort and hard work put in by the nineteen players on duty and sets us up well for the next challenge that will come our way in the Championship.
