St Colmcilles start slowest in both halves but outgun Dee Rangers in first round of Junior C Championship
HT Dee Rangers 1.2 St Colmcilles 3.9
FT Dee Rangers 2.9 St Colmcilles 4.19
Meath Hill, the biggest pitch in Meath, was the venue on a perfect evening for football.
Dee Rangers settled early and raced into an immediate 1.1 within 2 minutes. St Colmcilles looked rattled and struggled to get any rhythm or to get out of their half for the first few minutes, only goalkeeper Grainne Reilly making a couple of important saves prevented Dee Rangers from increasing their lead. And then the tide turned.
Cilles back six stopped any further concessions by establishing dominance inside their 45m line. Cilles core of captain Tara Shortt and midfielders Tess O’Neill and Cliodhna Cairns fed possession to their forwards who then scored an unanswered 3.9 – goals from Tara McHugh (marking her return from a serious injury), Tess O’Neill and Alison Boyle, plus points from Ashling Dyer (0.6-3f), Tara McHugh (0.2) and Jayne Kerr (0.1).
Dee Rangers then got the last point of the first half, leaving Cilles 13 points ahead.
In the second half Dee Rangers opened strongly and took the challenge to St Colmcilles, contesting territory, possession and most importantly matching Cilles for scores. However the gap remained and a fine St Colmcilles team performance was capped by a late move that started from wing back Naoife Lenihan, was processed through the midfield with multiple hand passes before being fed to Alison Boyle, who’s cool finish into the bottom left corner of the net added to points from Jayne Kerr (0.1), Meath U16 Caoimhe McPeake (0.1 on her senior debut), Maebh O’Sullivan (0.2) and the superb Ashling Dyer (0.6- 4f).
