Terrific contest in crazy weather delivers win for Trim in league opener
FT: Trim 4.4 (16) St Colmcilles B 2.9 (15)
HT: Trim 3.3 (12) St Colmcilles B 1.1 (4)
The game was moved from Trim to the coast due to the rain all week. It was moved again at very short notice from Piltown to Seafield due to the rain last night. Seafield gave us a constant gale, a short blizzard and some lovely sunshine – all four seasons in 90 minutes.
The match was even more eventful. Two minutes played and two goals shared, with Deanna netting for Cilles. Trim wisely used the wind as a booster to launch repeated attacks, Cilles defense, inspired by Grainne and led by the backline of Kate, Caoimhe and Eimear gave a masterclass in defending and limited Trim’s scoring opportunities. Trim logged a further 2.3. Alannah scored Cilles only point just before the whistle. Cilles would have the wind in the second half but faced an eight point deficit.
The game resumed at a frenetic pace and it took six minutes for Deanna to register the first point. Alannah’s goal in the 13th minute gave real heart to Cilles, Sadbh capped a fine run to log a point. Captain Ash Dyer was central to the effort to push and press Trim to overturn the scoreboard and Cilles lead by two points going into the last few seconds. Trim however never gave up the chase. We coaches have a cliche about ‘playing the whistle’ and despite the umpire signalling a wide ball the ref waved play-on, Trim moved the ball inside and rifled the ball into the net. The whistle goes and the ref signals the end of the match. A one point win for Trim.
The Cilles family are delighted to have Gráinne back to her best after a serious injury last season. The future’s blue! Cilles Abu!
