St Colmcilles 2 – 07 Donaghmore Ashbourne 0 – 10

This final group game between the Cilles and Ashbourne was a tight affair. With the closeness of the group in which any of the teams could finish on top a win would not necessarily guarantee progression for the Cilles. As a result the game had plenty of mistakes with scores difficult to come by.

Knowing they had to win and by a greater score difference than Dunderry, if they were to win their match, the Cilles lads allowed the nerves get the better of them as they fell six points to no score behind by the fifteenth minute. During this period they had plenty of possession but could only manage four wides and a definite goal chance during this time. Gradually the Cilles got their act together and finally got their first score with an Eanna Walsh point just before the water break.

The Cilles lads got themselves back in the match during the remainder of the half with 2 points from Ewan Coughlan and further points from Ben Wilde and Mark Whearty in response to one from Donaghmore which reduced the deficit to just two points. The half time score was St Colmcilles 0-
05: Donaghmore Ashbourne 0-07.

The gap increased to three points with Donaghmore Ashbourne getting the first score of the second half. A second point from Mark reduced the deficit again before a run which ended in a goal from Adam McCabe put the Cilles ahead for the first time in the match. Another goal shortly after, this time from Ewan put the Cilles four points ahead. The last score before the water break was a point for Donaghmore Ashbourne leaving just the one score between the sides going into the final part of the game. In the last quarter both teams just added a point to their totals which gave the Cilles a
very hard earned three point victory with a final score of St Colmcilles 2-07: Donaghmore Ashbourne 0-10.

Preventing Donaghmore Ashbourne from scoring a goal was the winning of the game for the Cilles. The defence grew into the match and restricted the opposition to just four scores during the last three quarters of the match. Scoring two quick goals gave the Cilles the confidence to see out the game.

In the end the other match in the group ended in a draw which was enough to see the Cilles through to the Premier Division 3 final. A big Improvement will be required to go all the way.
