St. Colmcilles B lose to Gael Colmcilles in Masita Championship Junior C final

HT:   Gael Colmcilles 4.6                St Colmcilles B 0.4

FT:   Gael Colmcilles 6.13              St Colmcilles B 0.11

Congratulations to Gael Colmcilles on their victory.  They established an early lead and built steadily on this to ensure the win.  Gaels have played very well throughout the season and earned the silverware today.

Our best wishes to Cliodhna Cairns who suffered a broken collar bone in the second half.

St Colmcilles B were asked before throw-in to give it everything today, take the challenge to the Gaels and never stop fighting.  And how they fought and fought to the final whistle.

Ciara Kilcoyne in goals snuffed out many dangerous long balls and picked out her teammates constantly with clearances and kickouts.  Eimear, Caoimhe Mc and Suzanne were bombarded at full back but stood firm and made Gaels work for every score.  Caoimhe H came on for an injured Sabdh late in the first half and gave another assured performance.

Suzanne moved to half back for Sadbh and immediately won the ground battle for possession, combined with Eimear to work the ball through the hands and against the wind to feed Aishling in midfield.  A quick pass to Cliodhna, onwards to Saoirse and the ball split the posts for Cilles most memorable point of the half.

Katie, Caoimhe W, Sadbh and Suzanne were tireless throughout in harrying their opponents and contesting every possession, they needed to be as Gaels were relentless in pressing forward and using the strong wind to feed their full forwards.

Cliodnha and Aishling ran support lines for the backs and forwards, working hard to find free space, providing options for the Cilles ball carriers and disrupting many Gaels moves.

Niamh, Ellie and Naoife covered every blade of grass linking with wing-backs, midfield and the full-forwards.  Ellie scored 0.4, all from play in the second half, after switching to full forward where she again showcased her power and skill.

Jayne (0.1), Saoirse (0.2) and Deanna (0.3, 2f) were dogged, determined and very productive on limited supply in the first half.   Holly (0.1), Maedbh, Meg, Aoibhin and Alison brought fresh legs and keen attitude in the second half.  The textbook defending by the forwards ‘high up the field’ helped slow the Gaels supply and limited the Gaels opportunities.

This is the second year for a second Cilles adult team and we had 29 players available for this game.  All have contributed to the team reaching the final but unfortunately not all can get to play.  Catherine, Kate, Niamh H, Georgina, Grainne, Karolina, Aoife, Caitlin (and Sarah who was unavailable) provided great support and encouragement to their team-mates.

Roger, Mark, John, Ollie and Rebecca – the Cilles family thank you for all the time, effort and commitment you have given to the team.  The long-term objective of management/mentors is to achieve improvements year on year.  You’ve clearly succeeded.

The Cilles family were out in force today and we thank you for the loud cheers, big hugs and warm words.  Thanks also to the Club committee and Cllr. Stephen McKee for the meal afterwards in Piltown.

Though defeated today the future is blue!  Cilles abu!
