St Colmcilles U13 Roinn A team successfully reached the Semi Final of the U13 Championship, having passed through the round robin stages of the competition unbeaten and thereby securing a home semi final on Saturday Oct 16th.
Simonstown, with their strong running midfielders and goal scoring forwards, who had also beaten the St Colmcilles U13 team in Piltown in the summer grading league, were the opposition in the Semi Final. The hosts knew they had to be at their best against the visitors who already had a good track record in Piltown.
Andrew Smith from Dunshaughlin took charge of the game on a beautiful autumn afternoon on an excellent Piltown pitch, which was set up for a wonderful afternoon of football.
The game started at a very fast pace, with end to end football between two teams that have gotten to know each other very well this season. St. Colmcilles got the first score of the game which was matched by Simonstown but a few missed scoring opportunities by the hosts allowed Simonstown’s accurate forwards to notch up some good pointed scores and creep ahead.
Some great defence by the home team pushed back some excellent Simonstown attacks and limited their scoring chances in the first half, whilst good pressure at the opposite end allowed St Colmcilles to edge back in front and build a lead of 2:10 to 0:05 at half time.
In the second half Simonstown continued their excellent play around the middle of the field, making strong runs into the St Colmcilles scoring zone but were met by some excellent defensive work that turned the ball over and provided the home forwards with a steady supply to gradually stretch their lead to finish with a winning margin of 6:17 to 0:10.
The final score did not reflect the excellent play by a talented Simonstown team, where the game was in fact much closer, with the visitors posing a real threat of scoring goals from their excellent running game. The St Colmcilles defence held strong and the home forwards converted their chances when they came which was the difference between the two sides. Both sets of spectators were treated to an excellent sporting game of football, played in true championship spirit that bodes well for the future of both clubs.
St Colmcilles look forward to their RS Awards U13 Championship final on Oct 30th, against our good friends in Ratoath who defeated St Peters Dunboyne, in a close game in Dunboyne by a score of 4:11 to 2:15.
