Well done to our U16 reserves in their latest victory against a determined Dunboyne team. This makes four wins out of four matches for our disciplined, focused and hard working footballers.
St Colmcilles : 12.10
Piltown, Sunday 24th March 2019
The main pitch in Piltown was in great condition tonight as our girls played into a stiff breeze in the first half. Having played Dunboyne already this season, we were acutely aware that we had a difficult task ahead of us. Our Midfield pairing of Eabha Brerton Hurley and Mia O’ Byrne made sure that our team got off to a flying start! Their hard work ensured that our half forwards, Grace Heaslip, Eimear Brennan and Brianna Martin were provided with fantastic opportunities to put scores on the board.
The Dunboyne defence battled hard to keep this attack at bay, but some great teamwork and intelligent hand-passing allowed our full forward line of team captain Ailbhe Horan, ably assisted by Melody Craig-Boyle and Siofra McCarron to slot home some superb goals and points to bring the half time score to 6-5 for Naomh Colmcille with Dunboyne keeping in touch with 3-2.
Cilles were well aware that Dunboyne would start strongly in the second half and our amazing goalkeeper, Ella McCabe thwarted multiple attacks by Dunboyle and her calm presence settled our team greatly. The full back line of Darcie Usher, Rachel Boyle and Grace O’ Dwyer made sure that our opposition was not going to have an opportunity to close the gap by scoring goals. Their tenacity and superb defending resulted in our team regularly turning over possession which provided our half back line of Eva Jean Quinn, Abbie Sherlock and Aoife Salinger with the opportunity to go on the attack and carry the ball back into Dunboyne’s half and take our team back onto an attack footing.
When Elizabeth McGowan and Molly McCloskey came into the full back and half back lines respectively, they injected a pace and energy which assisted this attack to allow our team to stretch our lead. Dunboyne never gave up and their commitment was evident when one of their girls was unfortunately injured and had to be carried off the field of play. We all wish her a speedy recovery.
When Aimee Smith and Chloe Martin entered the fray in the full forward line, they made an immediate impact. They epitomised a fantastic team effort which culminated in a full time score of 12 goals and 10 points to 3 goals and 3 points against a hard working Dunboyne team which never gave up.
The confidence that this latest win gives our team is well deserved, and testament to all the hours and hard work that has been put in by players and parents alike. The future of our club is bright! Cilles Abú!
