Junior B Championship Quarterfinal – 9 September 2018 – Skryne

St Colmcilles 1-13 Boardsmill 3-08

The disappointment of the Cilles men at the final whistle of this match said everything. It was a game that they should have won, looked like winning but ended up loosing to a point scored late in added time. Having conceded the first score the Cilles men took control of this game and were only headed again by the free at the end.

The Cilles third Jun B quarterfinal in a row saw them up against the Boardsmill first team for what was a new experience for the team. Not knowing what to expect ensured that the team was ready to deal with whatever came at them. Boardsmill did just that when after a few tentative moments by both teams they opened the scoring with a well taken goal. This stirred the Cilles into action whit points from Gary McCloskey and Matthew Breen. Boardsmill stretched the lead back out to two points before the Cilles took over. In the person to halftime they added a goal from Darragh Brodigan who having started the move finished it to the net. Four points from Gary, two from Eoin O’Neill in addition to points from Lorcan Smith and Lee McGuiness saw the Cilles holds a half time lead of seven points with the score at Cilles 1-10; Boardsmill 1-03.

While the halftime score saw the Cilles well ahead it did not reflect the superiority they displayed during the first half where the number of missed opportunities gave cause for concern as to whether the form would be maintained for the second half. The second half started with another quick goal for Boardsmill which gave them the confidence and belief that they were still in this game. The impetus gained from that goal saw attack after attack towards the Cilles goal that added a further goal and three points to their tally bringing it to 3-05. While the Cilles defenders worked hard to keep the attacks at bay, the forwards return was insufficient to stem the tide adding only three points for Gary during the second period.

Missed passes and poor decision making saw Boardsmill only two points behind with time running out. Two further points from Boardsmill same the match level on the 60minutes. No matter how hard the Cilles tried they could not get the ball up the pitch to get a score that would put them in the lead again. With the referee checking his watch, Boardsmill once again turned over the ball. Their subsequent attack saw them awarded a free on the 21 yard line half way to the sideline. Credit is due to the free taker who slotted it home to put Boardsmill ahead when the final whistle blew. The final score was Cilles 1-13; Boardsmill 3-08.

In spite on the result credit is due to the team for the effort put in in reaching the quarterfinal against the odds and for almost putting a first team out. A lot would have been learned from this run which will hopefully benefit the lads in the years to come. The desire and never say die attitude shown by Boardsmill has to be commended as they set about their task in the second half. There was no shame in being pipped at the post in this game. We need to make more of our chances and improve our decision making to make it to the next stage of the Championship. Roll on next year and we will give it another go.
