St. Colmcilles GAA Club, Pairc Ui Rís, Piltown, Bettystown, Co Meath 0877441731

Played on an excellent surface in Skyrne on Friday 7th September 2018, this was the first of three adult quarter finals of the weekend at this venue for the St Colmcilles Club.

The Cilles faced big bookies favourites and last year’s beaten senior championship finalists Summerhill in a first ever quarter final at senior level for them. It was the men from Summerhill that persevered after a spirited second half come back from the Seasiders.

The Summerhill team lived up to the favouritism in the first half where they dominated both the play and the scoreboard and led convincingly 2-11 to 2-2 at the half time break.

The Cilles went into the game minus Jack Reynolds and Ciaran Ward, whom both failed late fitness tests in the pre match warm up. Ben Brennan and Tomas O’Hoistin were both thrust into action, ironically both replacements carrying hand injuries, with Ben recently undergoing surgery following an injury sustaining following his heroics for Meath against Tyrone.

St Colmcilles needed to have a good start to the second half, however they conceded two early points from Dardis to face into an eleven point deficit. The Cilles needed to respond and a rejuvenated team kicked into action and through excellent pressure and attacking football, they fought back with some excellent inspirational scores including a second goal from Graham Reilly, and five excellent points from play from the boot of James Conlon. The Cilles were tenacious in this period, every ball was attacked and fought for and the Cilles attacked in numbers. In this period the Cilles managed to cut the gap to three points however will also rue a number of wayward passes and missed scoring opportunities when they could really have put Summerhill to the sword.

With the gap at three points the Cilles were to lose a player to a red card and thereafter the men from Summerhill were able to tag on three late points to leave the margin at six points on the last blast from referee Cormac Reilly’s whistle. The East Meath men will rue the first half performance had they played with the same tempo and drive in the first half as the second then maybe the result may have been different, The Cilles can be proud of their second half performance and will know there is more in the tank and can look positively towards next year. Up next for Summerhill is a semi-final clash versus Ratoath or Donaghmore Ashbourne.
