Summer 2018 will be etched in the mind of Hurling in East Meath for a long time to come. On Monday 6th of August The Saints played in their first ever juvenile county final. While the team came up just short, the path has been set for those that follow. The U12 Saints, who are an amalgamation team made up of both Cilles and St Pat’s players trained together for the first time in March and have come a long way in the intervening 5 months. They have travelled the length and breadth of County Meath, playing and beating some of the great names in Meath hurling.

To get to the Summer league final there was an epic semi-final win against hurling kingpins Kiltale, this set us up with a clash against Don/Ash, a team we had drawn with earlier in the year. We travelled in large numbers to Paddy O’Brien Park in Navan, the Hurling community from both St Colmcilles and St Patrick’s were there for their team. In a hard fought battle, The Saints gave as good as they got with Captain Michael Timmons and Centre half forward Daithi Wade keeping the score board ticking over. We went in at half time drawing 3 scores apiece.

The second half started in a similar manner with a quick exchange of scores – no quarter asked or given – the Saints hit an unlucky 10 minute spell where we had to change goal keepers on two occasions. Don/Ash were quick to take advantage of the Saints changes and stretched out a lead that The Saints just couldn’t reel back in, they fought gallantly and bravely right until the last second.

This is a team for the future, many of the team will play at U12 again next and 4 are on the Meath High Kings development squad. The boys have done East Meath very proud. The evening was not finished there, we returned the Piltown, where St Colmcilles held a pizza party for the players, parents, Coaches and supporters. This has truly been an East Meath success, especially for the first season together. Training is in Piltown on Mondays and Stamullen on Thursday’s with matches in Stamullen. The future is very bright!!!
