The Padraig Cooney Schools Cup
2017/18
The 2018 Cooney Cup once again promises to be a great and very unique competition. A Competition for children in 5th and 6th class across schools based solely in East Meath, The Cooney Cup is now in its 5th year.
The inaugural competition in 2014 saw 11 schools participating involving 6 clubs with matches played once a month across multiple venues culminating in a superb final between Duleek Boys NS and St Marys PPS, Bryanstown that was played in Pairc Tailteann on the 2nd week of June. Duleek Boys were the inaugural winners in great final and the competition has come in for universal praise ever since. The 2017 champions of the Cooney Cup for the very first time was Whitecross NS from Julianstown, whilst St Pats NS won the Division 2 Corn Cois Farraige
This year there will be once again two competitions, with two Divisions of six Teams . Division 1 Teams (six teams) will play for the Cooney Cup and the remaining six teams will play in Division 2 for An Corn Cois Farraige.
Moving up to the Cooney Cup this year is St Pats NS Stamullen, who could well threaten some of the established schools for the 2018 Title. Bellewstown/Mount Hanover drop to Division 2 and will be joined by a new school this year in St Stephens NS from Walterstown. We wish St Stephens NS the best of luck in this competition for 2018
The two competitions are of course part of our “ Club and School Gaelic is Cool !”, schools coaching programme now in its 10th year and which offers Gaelic Coaching and games to children from 1st to 6th class. This year’s Cooney Cup and the new Corn Cois Farraige are fully supported in conjunction with the Meath County Board and Leinster Council.
Both Competitions will see games fixed once a month and across multiple venues but all around the clubs in East Meath only. All matches will have fixed neutral referees as well. We hope all the schools enjoy the two competitions and we look forward to two great finals on in early June 2018
