Cilles Skills Camp 2024

Reflecting on an Unforgettable Teen Camp: August 2024

The first week of August was an exciting time as we welcomed a vibrant group of teens to our much-anticipated Teen Skills Camp. The week was filled with diverse activities that blended learning with fun, providing each participant with new skills, friendships, and unforgettable memories. Here’s a recap of the incredible experiences our teens enjoyed as part of the camp.

Tuesday: Brewing Confidence and Mastering Self-Defense

The camp kicked off on Tuesday with an engaging Barista Training session, where the teens learned the art of coffee making with Gary from Deja Bru. From brewing the perfect espresso to experimenting with latte art, they left with impressive new skills that they could proudly share with family and friends.

The afternoon shifted gears with a hands-on Self Defence class, delivery by Ricky. This session empowered our camp goers with practical techniques to ensure their safety, boosting their confidence and awareness in everyday situations.

Wednesday: Sporting Excellence and Creative Exploration

Wednesday morning brought a deep dive into the world of sports officiating with a Referee Skills workshop led by intercounty referee Ian Howley. The teens gained a behind-the-scenes understanding of what it takes to be a referee, including the quick thinking and rule knowledge required to make the right calls.

In the afternoon, the campers had the opportunity to explore their creative side with a choice between two fantastic activities:

  • Makeup Lessons with Aoife Culhane, where they learned the latest trends and techniques in makeup artistry.

  • Barbering with Jamie Duffy, offering them hands-on experience in hair cutting and styling.

Thursday: Communication, Compassion, and First Driving Lessons

Driving Lessons with Aiden Darcy Driving School

Thursday was all about learning to communicate and connect in new ways. The day started with an inspiring Sign Language session with Edel Flynn, where the teens learned the basics of this essential skill, opening their minds to new forms of expression.

The afternoon featured a session on Sales Training and Communication with Ciara Lalor. The teens acquired valuable skills in persuasion and effective communication, which would undoubtedly serve them well in various aspects of life.

Special Activity: On Thursday, our teens had the unique opportunity to get behind the wheel for the first time. Local driving instructor Aiden Darcy guided them through their initial driving experiences in a learner car at the Piltown car park. The thrill of driving for the first time was a highlight of the week, leaving the teens excited and eager to learn more.

Friday: Life-Saving Skills, Business Insights, and a Camp Finale

The week wrapped up on Friday with a First Aid Training session led by Mark Brodigan. This essential workshop provided the teens with the knowledge and confidence to handle emergencies, an invaluable skill they could carry forward in life.

The afternoon focused on nurturing their entrepreneurial spirit with a Business Start-Up session. Fergal Grimes, from Scor Beo, shared insights and practical advice on turning ideas into successful ventures, inspiring many of the teens to think about their future careers.

To celebrate the end of an incredible week, the campers were treated to a well-deserved Ice-Cream making activity- though the weather didnt lend itself to it - it was enjoyable all the same! All got to reflect on their week of learning and fun, making it the perfect conclusion to the camp.

A Week to Remember

The Teen Skills Camp was more than just a series of activities—it was a platform for growth, learning, and making lasting friendships. We hope the skills and memories they gained will stay with them for years to come.

Thank you to all the parents and guardians for entrusting us with your children. We’re already looking forward to next year’s camp, where we hope to create even more unforgettable experiences!

A huge thank you to all the people who took time out of their summer to present during our camp. Most especially thank you to Ciara Kilcoyne, who was our camp supervisor and made sure that the week ran to plan and that everyone was looked after. Thank you Ciara.

For any feedback or more information about our programs, feel free to reach out. We’re always here to help.
